While this round of polling is likely a reflection of name-recognition, it does provide us with a valuable baseline.

Of course, it's disappointing to see that a candidate with numbers like Tom Udall has already turned down a run for the seat. And, as of now, Bill Richardson is still running for President.

  1. ….did Tom Udall throw away a freebie pass to the U.S. Senate?  Did he give his reasoning?  Does he think he’ll steal his brother’s thunder up in Colorado?  I hope he changes his mind now that he sees poll numbers where he’s mopping the floor up with the competition.

  2. Could Richardson make it through Feb. 5, crash and burn, and then turn around and run for Senate?

It’s clear that he really wants to at least try the whole presidential bid thing, but once Feb. 5 passes, if there’s no way for him to even come close to the nomination, might he change his mind?

It’s a thought, anyway. Does anyone know the filing deadline for New Mexico?

  3. if denish decides to run for senate?  they strike a backroom deal where he runs for governor and she runs for the senate (all assuming richardson doesn’t jump in). udall be 64 in 2012 when bingaman MIGHT retire, so he’s probably not planing a senate career considering his age. that means for the future there are only a few other options, governor, leadership in the house, the cabinent (especially if there’s a richardson whitehouse) staying where he is, and retiring.  the question is what he wants.

    1. He has a seat on the Appropriations Committee, so he can send lots of federal money to New Mexico, and he doesn’t want to give that up.

    2. Schumer shouldn’t accept no as an answer quite yet from Uda;;. Remember Sherrod Brown announced he wasn’t running then 3-4 months later changed his mind.

  4. First Tier
    Richardson and Udall
    Both have declined

    Second Tier
    Madrid and Chavez
Nothing from Madrid, Chavez is running

    Third Tier
    Wiviott

  5. But I’m even more upset with Udall than I was before. Seriously, he turns down a senate race where he starts off 15 points ahead! It’s times like this I REALLY hate being in this state… *grumbles*

      1. didn’t poll Diane Denish, the LG. It polled just  about everyone but her, and I wondr why it did that because it would be very interesting to see her strength as a candidate beucase she is the one I am kind of leaning towards right now as the strongest candidate.,

Lt. Gov. Diane Denish says, despite reports to the contrary, that she is “very seriously” considering running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Pete Domenici.

Media reports in recent days have suggested that she was making a deal with Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chávez to stay out of the Senate race if he stayed out of the 2010 gubernatorial race, and many have suggested her consideration of the Senate race isn’t serious.

    No so, Denish says.

“The compelling argument is this: The country is in a mess and what we need is really good candidates to step forward,” Denish said today in an interview. “If the country wasn’t in a crisis, I think I would not blink an eye (in deciding against running for Senate), but I think building a stronger majority in the Senate is a real priority at this time.”
